Richard J. Shanley

Richard J. Shanley, 75, of 5 Juniper Road, Windham, New Hampshire, died of cancer on Saturday, June 13, 2015, in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his loving family. Rich was born April 12, 1940, in Sharon, the only child of his parents, Joseph S. and Anna Shanley, and was a member of the Sharon High School Class of 1958. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy on the USS Boxer. He worked on anything with a motor, and restored his favorite 1965 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia more than once. He greatly enjoyed woodworking, and was proud of a nice collection of antique wood planers. He did a lot of handmade projects in the house, including most of the window frames, a dining room table, and a coffee table. He loved nature and camping, always fed the birds, was a great cook, loved the comic strips Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbs, and never stopped being a rebel, often writing to editor of the paper. Richard is survived by his life partner of 32 years, Alice Szczepkowski of Windham; daughter, Stephanie Shanley of Oregon; step-children, Todd LaBerge of Alexandria and Sara LaBerge of Florida; grandchildren Olivia and Tommy; and extended family and friends. A Memorial Gathering was held in the Cremation Society of New Hampshire, 243 Hanover St., Manchester on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
