Matthew Pope

Matthew Pope, 69, of 1135 French Street Extension, Sharon, died at 10:37 a.m. Sunday, February 10, 2008, in the Cleveland Clinic. He was born in Sharon July 28, 1938, a son of Claude Pope Sr. and Maude Holloway Pope. A lifelong Sharon resident, he graduated from Sharon High School in 1958 and continued his studies at Youngstown State University. He enlisted in the Navy and served in the Coast Guard as a medic and in the Marine Corps. After his return home, he continued his education in the medical field as an intern at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. In 1971, he began employment as an inhalation therapist at what is now Sharon Regional Health System, until his retirement in 2004 as inhalation department director. Matthew enjoyed baking, was a collector of videos and compact discs and liked gadgets. He enjoyed listening to classical and opera music. He is survived by his mother, Maude Pope, who resided with Matthew at home; three brothers, William Pope, Sharon; Raymond Pope, Salisbury, Md.; and Richard A. Pope, Farrell; and three sisters, Virginia Pope, Ernestine Pope and Minister Gwendolyn Pope, all Sharon. A funeral service was held at Ruth African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, 95 Connelly Blvd., Sharon, on Saturday, February 16th. Full military honors were rendered by Veterans of Foreign Wars Murray-Bell Post 7597, Farrell. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
